Dominicans – the Black Friars – first arrived in Edinburgh in the 13th century. Today our buildings at 23-24 George Square, acquired in the 1930s, are in urgent need of upgrading. The chapel is hard to access for many – rimpossible if you’re disabled – and it can only hold 100 people. Read on below for our vision.
To continue in George Square we need to invest in our future. So we have determined to:
- Build a new, larger chapel in the back garden of no.24 with disabled access and disabled toilets and connected to the café area.
- Modernise the existing buildings to make them fit for another generation.
- Provide better living space for the Dominican community.
Everyone can play a part through prayer, contributing their skills and time and making a financial commitment. Keeping the Door Open is an exciting opportunity to work together to build a secure platform for the Dominican mission in Edinburgh in the 21st century, and so create a permanent legacy for the benefit of future generations.
